As February comes to a close I have been reflecting on what it means to open your heart, be deeply connected, and add some sizzle to your love life. I have been practising & teaching a lot of heart opening yoga to help open up to unconditional love for ourself and others. These are the poses that I found to be the most powerful for tapping into that fluttering feeling of intimacy.
1. feel your heart beat
how to do it: Bring one hand over your heart and one hand over your belly. Slowly inhale and feel your belly rise, take an easy exhale and feel your belly fall. Continue this breathing, with the other hand tune into your heartbeat. Feel the connection to your heart centre, imagine your heartbeat getting more powerful and continue breathing steadily for 3 minutes.
why you should: This pose centres you, and prepares you to receive love and abundance from the world and in the rest of your practice. Take it up a notch by feeling deep gratitude for the love you already have in your life.
2. low lunge
how to do it: Step your right forward with your knee over your heel. bring your left knee to the mat and slide your left foot back until you feel a slight stretch in your thigh and groin with the top of your foot resting on the mat. lift your torso up, bring your shoulder blades together behind your back. If it feels accessible clasp your hands behind your back and gently lift your collar bones toward the sky. Lift your chin & breathe. (repeat on the other side).
why you should: This pose is a deep heart chakra opener. The heart chakra is responsible for our intention for adoration, our right to love and to be loved, our capacity for self-love, and our social identity.
3. puppy pose
how to do it: come onto all fours with your hips above your knees and your shoulders above your wrists. Start to walk your hands forward keeping your hips above your knees. let your forehead come to the mat and breathe deeply into the front of your chest. This pose can be intense so be gentle with yourself.
why you should: This pose is an intense heart opener and stretches the shoulder blades. While you’re here steady your breath and repeat the affirmation: “I am at home in my heart. I am free to feel my true feelings, desires, and passions.”
4. child pose
how to do it: Bring your toes together and your knees as wide as your mat. Bring your torso in between your thighs, your forehead to the mat and extend your arms overhead. Refine the quality of your breath.
why you should: Child’s pose opens the back of our hearts. This is the place that allows us to receive love. We sometimes forget that we are capable of accepting love and not just giving it. You deserve to receive and accept intimate love.
5. reclining twist
how to do it: Lie on your back, bring your left knee into your chest and give it a hug. Release your knee and gently let it fall over the the right side. Relax here for 3 minutes on each side
why you should: Twisting at the end of your practice restores equilibrium to the nervous system and can help detoxify anything that we have stirred up during this practice.
